As a section grower, Lance Herron manages the annuals production and the propagation for a family owned greenhouse business near Charlotte, North Carolina. A four acre wholesale greenhouse and nursery business, King’s Greenhouse supplies plants to landscapes, interiorscapers and other garden centers. "I'm building on my previous experience and increasing my knowledge in new areas," explains Herron, who previously spent five years working for a large greenhouse facility. Herron is now also responsible for transplanting, cuttings and moving plants as the production assistant.
Herron prides himself in cultivating fellow growers and traditional greenhouse annuals. "Besides my love for growing plants I enjoy teaching people. Whether I'm giving a tour to school children or working with a student assistant, I enjoy conveying the "whys" behind our decisions," he explains.
Herron truly enjoys his work, "Because plants are fun, there's no other way to put it, it's a joy to watch a plug being germinated, grown, transplanted, and mature into a beautiful plant that people will pay for." Herron equates his satisfaction to that of an artist, "It's fun to be able to work with plants, get a plant to grow the way you want it to grow -- it's like being an artist."
A seed germination course at OSU helped Herron discover floriculture, "This greenhouse is cool, I really like this," Herron recalls thinking at the time. "People immediately give me respect because they recognize OSU as a great school and that the horticulture program is one of the best in country. I feel great pride when I meet people and say I graduated from OSU."
